TMX Group Honours Remembrance Day

Representatives from Veterans Affairs Canada and National Defence, the Canadian Forces and Tom Kloet, CEO, TMX Group opened the market to mark Remembrance Day. Senator Nicole Eaton was joined by Second World Veteran Jan de Vries. Each year, Canada marks Veterans' Week, November 5-11 to honour and remember all the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace. This year, Remembrance Day also marks the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy; the 65th anniversary of Italian Campaign and the 65th anniversary of the Liberation of Belgium. The brave Canadians who served in these Second World War campaigns answered their nation’s call during its time of greatest need. They left their homes and families to defend the values we hold dear: freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Lest we forget.

Canadian Forces Parliamentary Program

In July of 2009, I was honoured to spend time on board the HMCS Ville du Quebec ( http://www.navy.forces.gc.ca/villedequebec/0/0-s_eng.asp) and received hands-on experience living life as a member of Canadian Forces. What a great opportunity to gain valuable insight into the challenges facing our troops!

We sailed from St. John's, Newfoundland and took part in a variety of exciting naval exercises before docking at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I cannot way enough about the professional calibre of our Navy. Their dedication, their knowledge, and pride in their country is commendable.

I encourage you to read my speech in the Senate about our Navy.

Visit to the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response

In May of 2009, I was invited by the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, to sponsor Bill C-11 (Human Pathogens and Toxins Act) in the Senate of Canada.

I was involved in many briefings, including a special tour of the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response (http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/cepr-cmiu/). There, I met with the numerous professionals who are responsible for coordinating Canada's health security issues.
