Welcome to my Senate website and the chronicle of my activities in the Senate. Every day is exciting, rewarding and inevitably brings a new challenge.
Since my appointment to the Senate in January 2009, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of the work of the Senate. Although the public work is done every afternoon in chamber, the heart of the matter is often found in the work of the standing committees.
The standing committees of senate play a critical role. No bill is given Royal Assent without first undergoing the scrutiny of the relevant Senate Committee where witnesses may be called to provide independent advice and opinions on the important components of each bill.
On average, over 50 bills are examined and 30 special studies are undertaken each year by the Senate’s standing, joint and special committees. There are currently sixteen Standing Committees of the Senate.
Through my Committee work, I have met many impressive professionals in both the public and private sectors, whose commitment and expertise contribute to cutting edge innovation in Canada.
In October of 2010, I launched an Inquiry into the economic benefits of Alberta’s Oil Sands. Many of my Senate Colleagues contributed their ideas and expertise to this debate.
On February 2, 2012, I gave notice of a new inquiry that I will be launching shortly. This one will address the involvement of foreign foundations in Canada’s domestic affairs and their abuse of existing Revenue Canada’s charitable status.
On June 2, 2015, I was elected unanimously by my peers to serve as Speaker pro tempore of the Senate of Canada.
I hope you take a moment to browse my website. I will be updating my activities on a regular basis so please visit often. And I invite you to send me your comments and questions.
